Human grade meat is prepared ready for human consumption. It has been “stored, handled, processed and transported in manner that is consistent and compliant with regulation for current good manufacturing processes.” (AAFCO official publication 2018).
So is it OK to use non- human grade meat for home made foods? Many suppliers of meat for pet food diets would not be supplying “human-grade”. Technically once a food has left the human food supply chain, it is no longer "human-grade". These non- human grade products are generally considerably cheaper than the human- grade equivalents. The quality will vary between suppliers – some will be of a high standard and some will be quite unreliable. These suppliers do not have to adhere to the same stringent guidelines as the suppliers of human- grade food.
If you are making home made food for your pet this does not mean you should avoid all pet meat suppliers. However, a degree of caution is necessary when selecting where you source these ingredients to ensure you are getting a high quality product.
